Site Problem, 3 months lost… Thanks Hostgator

For my readers:

This picture is taken from the Hostgator Facebook page.    After what has happened to me, I cannot condone being their friend, I cannot “like” them. And although I had a great record with them up to this one moment…  sorry, losing this much data is inexcusable!! Newbie Buyer be warned

You may have noticed that there are a lot of post missing.  Three months worth to be exact.

The reason for this is hostgator.

According to service reps that I called and chatted with, They were doing emergency maintenance on their server/s The one that had all of my site/s information. According to their thread the server required “Emergency Maintenance”.

Those of you who know, both my sites were down (McFarland Home Extracts and The Missouri Taxguy).  Thius was due to/because of “Emergency Maintenance” from hostgator.

Really sucked too, One of my clients had just posted a great review about some of our products and recipes to all of her friends on Facbook, and sadly, there was no way any of them could get to the recipe or the products to order for them selves.

So what happened? To this day I still do not know. And nobody at hostgator said any more than “techs are performing “Emergency Maintenance”.

So I am thinking “maintenance”

Definition:

main·te·nance/ˈmānt(ə)nəns/

Noun:

The process of maintaining or preserving someone or something, or the state of being maintained: “the maintenance of democratic government”.

The process of keeping something in good condition: “car maintenance”; “essential maintenance work”.

Synonyms:

upkeep – keeping – support – sustenance – preservation

“Preserving” So what did you reserve hostgator? You lost three months of tweaking and guest post, my sites were down for 3 days….

And yes I understand the meaning of emergency but still. Really?

I did receive this in an email after they realized my site was still down:

Since the most recent backup of the server was taken today after the database was already corrupt, our upper-tier administrators are currently working to restore the database using what is still available on hosting server. We will update you concerning any progress made with the restoration. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this issue.

So just to make sure you all are getting this, after there was a crash at a Hostgator server, they did a back up of everyones stuff, after their server corrupted our/my data.

Really?

Now part of this is my fault. The part that says I should have been downloading a backup file,  My tech guy has been telling me for years to do this and up until yesterday when I replaced as many of the lost post as I could I hadn’t. (I have one now) I will be getting the post up daily until I get the ones I know of back up. In all I have lost 12 post and a whole lot of back end stuff. I have re covered seven of those twelve. They are all guest post except for two. So If in the next two weeks you don’t see one of your post, please let me know so that I can search for it specifically, and please note, I may need your help if I can not find it, you may need to resend that info to me.

A friend of mine, Seth David of the world famous Nerd Enterprises, has agreed with me in that this much data lost is Ridiculous and of this mess with my current provider,  I need to move over to GoDaddy. At this point I am in agreement that my relationship with hostgator is about to end.

I am not saying where I will go, but I know one thing for certain, in their performance of “Emergency Maintenance”, Hostgator has killed my ability to brag on how good their service is, as I have for the past 7 years. in so it won’t be hostgator.

I have spent an entire Day rebuilding what I could with help of the guest blogers and my own post. Up until this point. When Tax season is over, I am leaving the gator service and will start talking about them like Wal*mart,

if not worse.

Bruce – this is horrible! What a mess (an like you need any more to do during tax season). We use a local company to host our site – in 9 years we’ve never had an issue (no matter what crazy thing I’ve wanted to do) – he’s always available. If you’d like I can give you his info.

It really Blew chunks Nancy, I am moving but not until after season settles… I need to focus, and I am having trouble with that as it is…. :/

I agree, having lost three months of tweaking and post was about the most horrible internet experience I have had… and it did reduce me to tears, I had worked really hard on stuff from December through January.

I somewhat recovered but I won’t let them do it again.

wow.. that’s all I can say. I know it’s not much consolation but I have been using Backup Buddy (by iThemes). I backup my blog & website database daily and the full shabang weekly. It’s not a free plugin but it’s worth it for the piece of mind and the ease of auto backups and one-click restore.

    Hey Bruce,

I know it’s a little late but I just bumped into a strange Host Gator issue and was looking to see if anyone else had similar problems when I came across this post.

I’d highly recommend you give something like CodeGarage a try – it’s a lot like Backup Buddy as Joyce previously mentioned however it’s way less time intensive and you don’t have to setup any third party hosting for the backup files (dropbox, Amazon s3, etc).

I did a review on CG on my site here:

    http://www.profromgo.com/best-wordpress-backup-service/

There’s a ton of different ways to automate WordPress backups but this is by far the most painless and most convenient that I have found after trying out many different options for my site and my client’s sites over the years.

It keeps a 30 day archive of daily file and database backups that you can fall back on and revert to in case of emergencies or disasters such as this…

Your problem is a bit different than the one I’m currently experiencing with Host Gator but I figured I’d chime in…

You might also want to check out these services which offer a variety of backup/security solutiosn for WP powered sites:
