In 1986 I filed my first tax return. Aside from being amazed by the illogic of how it went together I didn’t give much thought to it other than “yeah, whatever”. A month later an Aunt who had been recently divorced, with two children still living at home, a mortgage, retirement savings, and sales of stock asked me if I could help her to prepare her return. To this day I remember that Saturday in her home looking at all the information she had and trying to correlate it into her return, like a movie I had watched the night before. The situation made a lasting impression to say the least. A tax preparer had been born. However since then I have prepared more returns than I can recall over the years. A very close friend of mine recently told someone at a dinner, that “…it (tax preparation) is like a game to Bruce”. Tax preparation isn’t a game by any means, it is, to me, more of a logic puzzle. What I mean by that is simply put a tax return is nothing more than “plus this, minus this equals that”.
